CHS Student Wins Rotary District 4-Way Speech Contest

The Rotary District 6690 Four-Way Test Speech Contest was held on 01 April 2017 in

conjunction with the 2017 Rotary District Assembly in Zanesville at Zane State

University/Ohio University - Zanesville. The Assembly was sponsored by District

Governor for 2017-2018 Shane Pyle, the 59 Rotary Clubs and 3,600 members in the

District.

Fourteen High School students from Central and Southeastern Ohio, who had won their

local Rotary Club contest, competed for honors and cash prizes. The subject of the

speeches was applying the Rotary Four-Way Test in our everyday relationships with other

people. The Rotary Four-Way Test is: “Of the things we think, say or do, 1. Is it the

TRUTH?, 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?, 3. Will it BUILD GOODWILL and BETTER

FRIENDSHIPS?, 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?” Herbert J. Taylor who was

President of the Club Aluminum Products Company, authored the Test in 1932. The Test

was adopted by his company as a succinct code of business ethics.

Daelyn Fry won first place and a cash prize of $500. Daelyn is a junior at Chillicothe High

School in Chillicothe and represented the Chillicothe Rotary Club. Kaylee N. Hurley of

South Salem won second place and a cash prize of $400. Kaylee is a senior at McClain

High School in Greenfield and represented the First Capital Rotary Club of Chillicothe.

Zahra Khuhro won third place and a prize of $300. Zahra is a freshman at Hilliard Darby

High School and represented the Hilliard Rotary Club.

First place winner Daelyn Fry repeated her winning speech for the attendees of the Rotary

District Assembly luncheon that same day.

Judges were James Barrington, Jennifer McKell, and Toni Stoepfel. Contest timer was

Molly Tharp. Barrington is a Chillicothe attorney and a member of Chillicothe Rotary

Club. McKell is the former Director of the Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library,

Past President of the State Library Board of Ohio, Board Member of Adena Regional

Medical Center, and Board Member of Horizon Telcom. Stoepfel is Facility Advisor of the

Maysville High School Interact Club, teaches English at Maysville High School, and is also

a member of the Educator Preparation Advisory Team at Muskingum University. Tharp is

a retired West Muskingum educator who taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades for 35 years, is a

volunteer for Genesis Hospital, and is a board member of the Foundation Board of

Genesis Hospital. The Moderator was Nelson Coleman of Chillicothe, he is a member of

and secretary of the Chillicothe Rotary Club.
