Each year CCSD and CEA set aside time to honor two retired teachers who made an impact through their years of devoted service to education. This year’s nominees grew up during a time when women were expected to become nurses, teachers, or secretaries.
And neither one was happy about those options. At CHS they began as colleagues; and when the Union went through a dark time with a strike looming these two single moms with four children forged a lasting friendship that has helped each one endure many celebrations and defeats. We are proud to honor Sally Rathkamp and Sharon Verhoff as the 2019 Educator Emeritus! Congratulations! Read more to learn about their stories as educators.
Kindness, Goodness, and Faithfulness: on Friday, January 25th we honored two inductees that live these words in their personal as well as professional lives. Treva Baker stated, "As I interviewed these two ladies for this award and watched their interaction with one another I could not help to think how they would be awesome examples in our new K2 and 3-6 buildings of teaching without walls. What do I mean by that? Well we have walls between each class that can be moved back so teachers can co-teach. These two ladies were not afforded that situation while they were teaching; so they created courses and teaching opportunities to do just that themselves. They were ahead of their
time." These two exemplary educators continue to find ways to educate in our community, which comes as no surprise. Congratulations again! Once a Cavalier, ALWAYS a Cavalier!
They were celebrated by the staff of CCSD and joined by family and friends for the award ceremony.
